March 20, 2018, Saint Paul – The top winners in the 2018 SPCO Youth Chamber Music Competition were announced on Sunday, March 18 at the Finalists Recital held in Sundin Music Hall at Hamline University.
Winning First Prize and the Grand Prize, which includes a performance at the Ordway Concert Hall on Saturday, May 19, was the Forzando String Quartet: Joelle Chen, (violin) from Edina High School; Makaela Foerderer (violin) from Southwest High school; Elizabeth Bergmann (viola) from Saint Paul Central High School; and Dylan Kinneavy (cello) from Southwest High School. Their coach is Tom Rosenberg of the Chamber Music Academy of the Saint Paul Conservatory of Music.
There were two Second Prize winners: the Michelangelo String Quartet and Pontem Firmissimum String Trio. Members of the Michelangelo Quartet are Raef Eddins, (violin) from Como Park Senior High School; Henry Zietlow (violin) from St. Paul Academy; David Michaeli (viola) from Nova Classical Academy, and Daniel Knapp (cello) from Mounds View High School. Their coach is Ray Shows of the Artaria Chamber Music School.
Members of Pontem Firmissimum are: J.P. Rabaey (violin), Joel Zabel (violin) and Annabelle Lecy (cello). All are from Marshall High School in Marshall, Minnesota.
Their high school orchestra teacher is Robert Wes Myers.
Third Prize went to the Lumos Quartet: Sarah Zhang (violin) from Woodbury High School; Penelope Corbett (violin) from Stillwater Area High School; Ariam Hashel, (viola) from Woodbury High School; and Sophie Morris (cello) from Eden Prairie High School. Their coach is Patricia Ryan of the Artaria Chamber Music School.
Additional awards went to:
The Tamberwood Jazz Quintet - winner of the Creative Category: Charles Menken (tenor sax) and Henry Menken (double bass) from Woodbury High School; Bruce Acosta (guitar) from Edina High School; August McKinney (piano) from Southwest High School; and Carter Pearson (drums) from Maple Grove Senior High School.
Winners of Level B for students age 15 and under: Trio Luminoso: Emily Kleiber (violin) from Hudson Middle School; Andrea Wallick (cello) from Eastview High School in Apple Valley; and Joseph Caswell (piano) from the Lighthouse School in Spring Lake Park. Their coach is Tom Rosenberg.
And the Wind Award went to Cl 3 Clarinet Trio from MacPhail School of Music: Owen Gordon from Edina High School; Penina Boros from Rockford High School; and Clare McDonald from South High School in Minneapolis. Their coach is Nina Olsen.
