What's new for 2018?

  • The competition is now open to pre-college students living in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, performing in ensembles of 3-8 players.

  • As a pilot project, we have added a non-classical category called CREATIVE.

Summary of Guidelines for Creative Category

Ensemble will be made up of three to eight performers (as in the classical category)

The group must contain at least one orchestral instrument aside from piano. Guitar, saxophone, percussion and harp are considered here to be orchestral instruments. Non-orchestral instruments such as banjo, harmonica, mandolin and maracas are acceptable.

Music must be composed.  Arrangements and re-arrangements, improvisational sections of a composed work, or a blending of styles are encouraged but not required.

Genres such as national folk music, Latin music, fiddle music and jazz  are acceptable.

The music (one or two selections) should total no more than 15 minutes in performance time..

To be considered for the finals of this competition, instrumental and equipment setup must take no more than five minutes to complete.

Application fee for this category is $100 per ensemble.

Application videos will be uploaded online. Judges will critique each ensemble and choose one winner.

The winning ensemble will be awarded $500 and will perform in the Finals/Winners Recital to be held on Sunday, March 18, 2018 in Sundin Hall, Hamline University, St. Paul, MN at 2:00 p.m.
