Winners of 2017 Competition

The top winners in the 2017 sixth annual SPCO Youth Chamber Music Competition were announced on Sunday, March 19 at the Finalists’ Recital held in Sundin Music Hall of Hamline University. The Grand Prize ensemble will perform on Friday, April 28 in the Martinelli Foyer of the Ordway Center preceding a Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra concert. Videos of all performances from this year’s Finalists’ Recital can be viewed on the organization’s YouTube channel.

The competition’s Grand Prize of $1,000 was awarded to the Donovan String Quartet. The group was also the winner of the String Division. Nadine Manske (violin), age 17, is an eleventh grader at St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists; Cate Carson (violin), age 14, a ninth grader at Northfield High School; Edwin Patrick Thatcher Donovan (viola), age 18, a twelfth grader at Minnetonka High School; Christopher Kwon (cell), age 17, ian eleventh grader at Maple Grove Senior High School; and Nicholas Sheel (cello), age 17, an eleventh grade homeschooler.

The First Prize winners of $500 the Wind Division  was The Woodwinks Quintet: Claire Gunsbury (flute), age 17, ia twelfth grader at Brainerd High School; Amelia Ryan (oboe), age 17,  a twelfth grader at Providence Academy; Susan Stewart (clarinet), age 18,  a twelfth grader at Edina High School; Maggie Jokinen (bassoon) attends Prior Lake High School; and Rachel Lauson (French horn), age 18,  a twelfth grader at Edina High School.

The Second Prize winner of $300 in the String Division was the Abderian Quartet: Ava Figliuzzi (violin), age 17, a twelfth grader at Brainerd High School/PSEO UMN; Grace Gutierrez (violin), age 18, a twelfth grader at St. Croix Preparatory Academy; Liza Roberts (viola), age 17, a twelfth grader at Minneapolis South High School; and Dylan Kinneavy (cello), age 15, a tenth grader at Minnepolis Southwest High School.

The Second Prize winner of $300 in the Wind Division was The Perfect Fourth: Claire Gunsbury (flute), age 17,  a twelfth grader at Brainerd High School/ U of MN PSEO; Ivy Anderson (bassoon), age 18,  a twelfth grader at Edina High School; Kaylee Nielsen (clarinet), age 17,  a twelfth grader at Mounds View High School; and Kennan LeJeune (horn), age 18,  a twelfth grader at Centennial High School. They are coached by Nina Olsen.

Winner of Level B and a cash award of $150 was Trio BISC_it!: Benjamin Lenzmeier (violin), age 15,  a tenth grader at St. Agnes; Sam Hanson (violin), age 14, a ninth grader at Saint Paul Academy; Isadora White (viola), age 15, a tenth grader at South West High School in Minneapolis; and Caelan Oxenham (cello), age 15, a ninth grader at Central Senior High in Saint Paul.
